You are :: Home >> Woodworking Lessons >> Chippendale Chair
Five weekends 9:00am to 4:00pm
Tuition: $1,000 plus materials
In attending this workshop the student will be making a faithful reproduction of a Philadelphia Chippendale chair circa 1775-1800. I was able to measure the original at the Yale University furniture conservatory and make an exact drawing of this classic. The graceful flowing of the partial circles of the slat, ears, and crest rail contrast with the boldly rippling of the curly maple.
This is a challenging project to attempt. However, all the keystone construction elements of a superior constructed chair are here without all the time consuming efforts of a ornately carved chair.
The first class meeting will be spent covering the safe use of the shops machinery, followed by a written test to start the second session. Proper techniques for operating each machine safely and for recognizing potentially dangerous situations will be emphasized. The safety test must be taken and passed by all student regardless of their past woodworking experience.
Tools
Students must bring their own hand tools and will receive tools lists and sources for purchasing what they need with confirmation of enrollment. Click on the links page for a list of sources for tools from various companies.
