Three Saturdays 9:00am to 4:00pm
Tuition: $300
This workshop explores the tradition of inlaying contrasting veneers and solid woods into a flat wood base. Various inlay decorations found on pieces from different periods and many regions will be covered.
Instruction will include methods of stringing, compass star inlay, line and berry, gouge cut inlay, along with hot sand shading. The use of scratch stock and a compass held scratch tool will be covered during this workshop.
Students in this workshop will have the opportunity to practice and execute their own designs using these methods on any current projects that they wish to embellish with inlay.
No prior experience inlaying is necessary, although some experience with the basic hand tools used in woodworking is helpful, but not required. All the methods taught can be done solely with hand tools, but during this class there will be minimal use of machinery used for convenience.
The first class meeting will be spent covering the safe use of the shops machinery, followed by a written test to start the second session. Proper techniques for operating each machine safely and for recognizing potentially dangerous situations will be emphasized. The safety test must be taken and passed by all student regardless of their past woodworking experience.
Tools
Students must bring their own hand tools and will receive tools lists and sources for purchasing what they need with confirmation of enrollment. Click on the links page for a list of sources for tools from various companies.
