Each piece starts by being chosen from the finest woods available. They are checked for beauty in the grain and texture. I often pass up wood that may be considered fine by industry standards for something that will add a natural grace to our man made design. The materials I work with are not uniform. They can be moody. They can be deceptive, sometimes hiding faults until the very last moment of finishing. Then I have to start all over again. Craftsmanship breeds patience.
Time tested hand joinery methods are key to the longevity of furniture, as are the hide glues of yesterday. In today’s market furniture is often purchased as a short term consideration--design that is in for now, but will be replaced within just a few years as the trend turns. That type of furniture is made to suit the shorter sighted consumer.
