Woodworking Lessons :: Side Table

Three weekends 9:00am to 4:00pm
Tuition: $600 plus materials

Students in this six-day course will have the opportunity to refine their woodworking skills through the construction of this small but extremely intricate constructed Hepplewhite end table. Working with furniture grade-hardwoods students will follow proper procedures of milling, cutting, and properly fitting pieces to make this exceptionally designed classic piece of period furniture.

The table top and drawer front can be made of the hardwood of your choice, but the rest of the table will be made of poplar then painted with milk paint and your choice of top coat.

Skills learned will include: building a complicated table structure, advanced milling, mortise and tenon joinery, (including haunched, double-tenon, and mitered), dovetails.

Joinery techniques will be done primarily on machines, including the drawer construction. The tapering of the legs will be zone with the combination of machine use and hand tools and a cleverly designed tapering jig.

The techniques in the construction of this table can be applied to larger tables. It is highly recommended that the legs and aprons of the table be made from poplar, which will be painted, and the table top and drawer front of a primary hardwood. This approach will keep your material costs down, afford you the opportunity to use antique milk paint and the combination of painted surfaces and the more customary finished surface make for great design opportunities.

The first class meeting will be spent covering the safe use of the shops machinery, followed by a written test to start the second session. Proper techniques for operating each machine safely and for recognizing potentially dangerous situations will be emphasized. The safety test must be taken and passed by all student regardless of their past woodworking experience.
