Three weekends 9:00am to 4:00pm
Tuition: $600 plus materials
The elements that make a sturdy case piece of furniture will be covered during the 35 working hours of this course. Key areas of proper construction to be covered include: haunched mortise and tenon joinery, machine made housed dovetails, and ship-lapped panels.
The cabinet is to be made with poplar and the finish to be milk paint. I stress the use of polar for many reasons not the least of which is the ease of working the material. I also use milk paint as a finish for its historical significance as well as its appearance.
The first class meeting will be spent covering the safe use of the shops machinery, followed by a written test to start the second session. Proper techniques for operating each machine safely and for recognizing potentially dangerous situations will be emphasized. The safety test must be taken and passed by all student regardless of their past woodworking experience.
Tools
Students must bring their own hand tools and will receive tools lists and sources for purchasing what they need with confirmation of enrollment. Click on the links page for a list of sources for tools from various companies.
